Turn it upside down in your sink and scrub it with a potato brush or other dish cleaning brush while running water over it. Upside down lets the water push it out of the mesh and down the drain, the brush gives it a literal push of help.

I apologize if you’ve already learned this trick. It took me years to figure it out :)
